Personality:

"You are indeed neither man, nor any ordinary machine. You are truly singular. But then, could anyone be said to be the same as anybody else?

People anguish over the gulf between themselves and others, and the lack of any who could possibly understand them... How is their situation any different from yours? What defines life is not death, but bonds... That is the answer you once reached. Then take that to heart and go forth. Remember that your bonds will remain unbroken, giving you the strength to withstand any suffering." - Elizabeth

To call Aigis a machine wouldn't only be the furthest from the truth, but also a blatant misunderstanding of her character. Though she is in fact mechanical, she breathes, cries, sleeps, dreams and is living in almost every sense of the word. While physical barriers exist to permit her from being truly called human, her most important quality is the fact that she has a heart.

Initially, Aigis was created as a weapon, the "Final Number" in a line of similar combat units. She was entitled the "7th Generation Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon", and while she still exists as that very weapon this fact doesn't govern her entire purpose as an individual; Aigis has been through tremendous changes over the course of Persona 3 that lead towards the molding of her personality, transforming her from a monotone battle-robot to an invaluable friend.

When first encountered she expresses that her absolute purpose and only intent is to protect the Main Character; a trait left over from certain plot points that occur in MC's (And Aigis') past, though over time situations change that allow Aigis to overcome her programming and gain a genuine human consciousness despite the fact of her cold metallic exterior. The full range of human emotions slowly seep into her mind, allowing us insight into each and every one of them - particularly love, which she expresses for the MC despite knowing that their relationship could never be "normal". Aigis' love for the main character is undoubtedly what set her down the path of attaining her humanity in the first place. Through the time spent with them she's able to cultivate her growing curiosity about the world and human life, jump-starting the evolution of her soul.

While the sacrifice of the MC at the end of Persona 3 wounds the entire group of SEES, it hits Aigis the hardest, as at the time she had only slightly altered her means for living. While she couldn't protect the MC from Nyx or the coming of the Fall, Aigis came to the conclusion that living meant being together with those you care for, though she had also witnessed the pain of being set apart from those you love. The thought of parting with the MC one day and being forced to live alone deeply scared her, though she also realized that life is ephemeral and finite, thus it must be cherished. Being mechanical and "lifeless" meant that she could remember MC as long as she was functioning, and so she swore to keep the MC within her heart forever. But life is cruel and unexpected, and without warning, the MC was taken not only from this world, but Aigis' as well, leaving her in a state of peril and doubt.

During the time after their passing, the fact of MC's death put Aigis into a state of discarding her humanity, a process that began robbing her of the human functions she had begun to learn such as sleeping and dreaming. To make matters worse, a new supernatural ordeal had forced her into action despite her sorrow and once again she and the members of SEES united to explore a phenomenon known as the "Abyss of Time", a paradoxical world that extended from the lower reaches of Tartarus all the way to the basement of the Dormitory to ensnare the group in an eternal timeloop. Through this ordeal, the dorm mates all learned just how deeply the darkness of the past year had tainted them, Aigis being no exception. Unknown to her, the emotions she had discarded made themselves manifest through a similar android known as "Metis", leaving the group to believe her only to be Aigis' sister and some by-product from the Kirijo Group, the organization formerly headed under Mitsuru's father, as well as the same group responsible for the creation of the living weapons.

Within the Abyss each member of SEES was forced to re-live portions of their past that led them to discover their Personae, though more importantly than that, it also manifested their collective sorrows into a powerful shadow taking the form of the Main Character. After a fierce battle, SEES prevailed, yet they were left with a choice. By eliminating the shadow they were each given keys to either unlock the door back to the present, or to go back into the past - before MC's sacrifice. This decision split the group while also leaving Aigis in a situation she couldn't easily remedy; while she couldn't endure "blindly wandering forward into the present", the idea of returning to the past also didn't feel right.

Eventually, the still shattered group fought for possession of the keys, leaving Aigis no choice but to fight her own friends. Though she proceeded through Ken and Akihiko with little problem, the prospect of continuing troubled Aigis, leading her to the decision of giving her key away - an action that could very well kill her given the fact that they represent strength of heart. Terrified by the prospect of being left alone, much like Aigis had been with the MC in the past, Metis breaks down, screaming that she couldn't stand to lose her sister, and that if she couldn't convince her otherwise, she'd give Aigis her own key if it meant keeping her alive. It's at this point that Aigis realizes the error in her ways, as well as how foolishly she had been living since the MC's death, and her resolve strengthens.

Eventually, Aigis, Metis and Fuuka triumph over the other members of SEES to realize Aigis' wish: to revisit to the past, right before the point in which MC sacrificed themselves. It's there that they learn of the truth, as well as the horrendous beast that was sealed as a result of their sacrifice. Learning of MC's true fate lifts weight from the shoulders of the dorm-mates and they successfully leave the Abyss.

The battles and hardships that occurred within the Abyss eventually led Aigis to her Answer - the final conclusion of her life and her reason for living: It taught her that the meaning of life was not death, but the bonds you forge with others, and that even despite the fact that life is sometimes painful it's not right to yourself or others to give up living because of hardships that you encounter. It was then that Aigis finally began to live again as well as understand that "all life shares a sea deep within its soul" The same "sea" that Metis had emerged from as proof of the existence of Aigis' humanity. At this point, she had also come to the conclusion that she was done grieving MC's death and that she could live on despite it... Even though the pain was still there, life itself is painful but that's also what makes it so beautiful; to know that your time on this world with all those you love is so finite, but to spend that time with them regardless and make memories that you'll never forget. Metis and Aigis reunited with that, and finally Aigis fell to slumber, her humanity restored. Not long after, it's discovered that Aigis' synaptic circuits have long since been burnt out and that she shouldn't even be operable, and yet, in an unexplainable twist of fate she continues as if truly alive.

Not long after the events of the Dormitory, Mitsuru goes on to create a group known as the "Shadow Operatives" - they're given official government sanction whilst also being backed in secret by the Kirijo Group, which Mitsuru now leads. Unsurprising given their name, the Shadow Ops take on cases involving the paranormal happenings pertaining to Shadows and Personae, and Aigis spends a respectable amount of time as one of the trusted members of the Operatives. She is numbered 5 in ranking with Mitsuru, most obviously, being #1 at the head of the Organization.

Because of her beliefs, Aigis lives as a shield not only for just her friends, but the whole of humanity as well; she's the sort of person who will go out of their way to protect others as she believes that if she tries hard enough her kindness will be capable of spreading, and that it may just be able to spread throughout the whole of the world should she and her friends try their hardest. No matter how unbelievable this conclusion may be, its her wholehearted belief and something she bases her existence around as a result. As a byproduct of this, she's also very cordial and equally as proper, though her habit of being so insanely formal has the tendency to stress others out.

Despite the awkwardness created through her attempts to grasp human nature, she tries her best to understand social norms and memes, as even though she and her friends have been through hell and high water, Aigis' time experiencing the calm of peace is limited. She's often found attempting to submerge herself into popular culture and history, be that with the aid of movies, novels or games, and much to the dismay of her friends, as a result she's always attempting to experiment with the new knowledge she's gathered. Aigis knows full well of her predicament in life, after all, while she may be "living" she isn't human, nor is she actually an android. Her existence is confusing in and of itself, creating experiences in life that can usually lead to some embarrassing or unexpected results, but in light of this, she's able to joke about her situation: from mistaking puns, to fumbling basic human expressions or phrases, to flying face-first full speed into sexual deviance without even realizing it (though some wonder if this is actually a legitimate mistake or not...), she's able to share a laugh with others despite the situation.

However, there's also a more serious aspect to Aigis' personality. Though she's most likely one of the most polite and genuinely caring individuals you'll ever meet, as well as a cherished and powerful friend, she's also no slouch when it comes to what she was built to do. Being given a spot in the Shadow Operatives has strengthened Aigis' resolve as well as alleviated any concerns she's had with being a living weapon even after finding her Answer. You see, despite briefly living a normal life after the adventures of the Dormitory, Aigis had little combat purpose once the threats to herself and humanity had ended, but within the Operatives, she's free to not only express her new found humanity, but her existence as a Shadow killing machine as well. Her skills are as sharp as a razor's edge, and her demeanor on the job switches from friendly and unassuming to professional and to-the-point. That said, despite this, her values never change, nor will she ever let them.

Because of the hardships they've been through together, Aigis has forged truly unbreakable bonds with her friends, and within the Operatives, this fact strengthens her resolve to even greater heights - in this setting, she's quite capable of repaying their trust as well as the equality they place in her with absolute results. Her combat aptitudes are monumental and never before has her ability to judge character and make important decisions been as keen. In some ways, Aigis' robotic nature makes itself all too clear, especially in the fact that she's so methodical and downright dangerous in combat, though despite being so marvelously talented, she's still very capable of making mistakes, as well as being shocked and surprised out of her normal tactical brilliance. After all, mistakes are only human.

One final event has also been essential in the molding of Aigis' personality - the existence of her sister, Labrys. While Metis had served as a younger-sister figure to her in the past, rather than existing as a legitimate, physical person, she represented the side of Aigis she had tried to cast away. Learning her Answer with the help of Metis not only instilled the sense of life and what it truly means to live in her, but helped teach Aigis of just how much she had gone through in coming to find her purpose and humanity. In Labrys, Aigis can see strong similarities to herself and the hardships she's endured, and in aiding her rescue as well as ensuring the well being of the Investigation Team in the P-1 Grand Prix Tournament incident, Aigis has yet another thing to live for and protect. Though her friends obviously played a massive part in shaping who she was and finding her answer, Labrys' existence, as well as the prospect of living and growing even more by her sister's side has Aigis in better spirits than ever.

You know, until Persona 5 happens ♥

Backstory:

Though I couldn't help but touch on a bit of this in the previous section, here's all the backstory needed!

Canon Powers:
  • Greatly enhanced physical strength, agility, flexibility and speed. Basically all the parameters of a normal human being are amplified several fold on account of Aigis being an android built for the specific purpose of eliminating Shadows.

  • Enhanced senses and varying different visual processing devices, such as X-Ray vision, Heat Vision, Motion Detecting, Electrocardiography and other processes that she uses to support her allies and hunt Shadows. She also possesses several similar audio abilities as well, including audio filtering processes, voice recognition (lie detection), radio wave acquisition, etc. She's also shown herself capable of a sixth sense, giving her the ability to feel other Anti-Shadow weapons such as herself.

  • Various quality of life enhancements! Aigis has working internet, music and telephone service, courtesy of the Kirijo Group, built straight into her systems.

  • Flight capabilities. Aigis has hidden booster units in her upper back that are deployed for flight maneuvers, however she also has secondary, more obvious boosters installed in her legs, around the upper thigh. She can achieve high altitudes with these boosters as well as impressive speeds.

  • Animal Comprehension! For some reason, Aigis is able to comprehend as well as SPEAK to animals such as dogs and cats

  • Orgia Mode, a sort of overdrive Aigis can achieve by releasing all of the limiters on her systems at once. It grants her a significant influx of sustained power for a few minutes before she must shut it down to prevent overheating and systems failure. During Orgia Mode, not only are Aigis' combat capabilities increased, but her sensory and flight systems as well. All in all, it ups her parameters across the board, but after using it, she'll be operating on a lowered power output for a few minutes to recharge. Aigis IS capable of cancelling Orgia Mode to prevent strain, but at the cost of not being in this form for as long as she could be.

  • Perhaps Aigis' greatest feature happens to be her built in Evoker, allowing her to draw out the powers of a Persona at will. Though she was initially built for the purpose of Shadow elimination, it was unheard of that she'd end up developing the power of the Wildcard. This skill allows her the power to summon multiple Personae, and her talent with is was further kindled while discovering her humanity following the events months after the defeat of Nyx and subsequent spreading of the Abyss of Time underneath the Dormitory.

  • Canon Weapons|Items:
  • "Handguns":
  • Despite the name, Aigis doesn't wield normal handguns, but rather, her hands ARE guns with each individual finger being another barrel. The magazines for said guns are loaded directly into her body though older-type arm replacements inject bullet canisters under her wrists and are ejected to be reloaded when needed. These serve as Aigis' most basic weaponry. They can also be loaded with non lethal weaponry. (PHYSCIAL)
  • "Hand Grenades":
  • Aigis' hands are capable of being detached and remotely detonated on command. Generally this is used as an absolute last resort, and the explosives used are highly explosive, but also highly STABLE given the method in which they are stored. (AGI)
  • Flamethrowers:
  • Pretty self explanatory. They're wrist/arm mounted and located around the top and sides of her arms. Though they are capable of firing off traditional plumes of flame, these weapons are also capable of creating powerful short to mid range explosions, similar to a shotgun in effectiveness and visual appearance. (AGI)
  • Drill Arm:
  • Aigis' arms/hands are capable of rotating rapidly, simulating a drill. Her fingertips can also be sharpened when not opened for use as gun-barrels. (PHYSCIAL)
  • Headband Machine Gun:
  • Two barrels are built into Aigis' "headband" running across the top of her hair. They're fed bullets from within her chassis and are capable of firing three different types: normal rounds, which are expended as one would expect, explosive ammunition, which are higher ordnance and shorter range, though capable of generating destructive results (As such, Aigis can only fire explosive rounds in short bursts.) And finally, non lethal rubber pellets. (PHYSCIAL & AGI)
  • Interchangeable weaponry:
  • Aigis can swap out various different parts of her inner weaponry, as well as her arm mounted ordnance, changing her gun hands to rocket fists, for example, or installing a sniper rifle onto her arm. (ATTRIBUTES VARY)
  • Heavy Weapons Delivery System:
  • Aigis' biggest upgrade since joining the Shadow Operatives would have to be her ability to store multiple different heavy ordnance weapons on her person seamlessly. This ability is achieved through the power of nanites, or nanomachines that exist within her body. When triggered, she's able to manifest one of several different heavy weapons onto her person, though always from behind herself initially. The weapons can then be deployed to her hands, or remain situated on her back depending upon the weapon in question. The items she can create are as follows:

+Back Mounted Bomb Launcher: "Bombs Away!" (AGI)
+Back Mounted Mortar Launcher: "7th Gen Radical Cannon" (AGI)
+Arm Mounted Gatling Gun: "7th Gen Gatling Blaster" (PHYS)
+Arm Mounted Piledriver: The "All out Attack" (PHYS)

+Back Mounted Heat Seeking Swarm Missile Launcher: "Orgia Mode Pandora Missile Launcher"
Due to the immense power of this weapon, as well as the sheer number of ordnance its capable of pumping out, it can only be used once before Aigis must return home to reload. Furthermore, its use is only capable during the activation of Orgia Mode. (AGI)

    Canon Allies:
  • The Kirijo Group as of Mitsuru's takeover as Leader.

  • The members of SEES/The Shadow Operatives

  • The main cast of Persona 4 given the end of P4A

  • Labrys, her older sister

  • The Lethal Elevator Assistant, Elizabeth

  • Canon Baggage:
  • Several ammo containers of varying shapes and sizes, containing bullets, rockets and bombs.

  • Two crates of small backup weaponry for installation or replacement. Combat knives, handcuffs, spare ties and other policey things

  • .... A dvd boxset of the Terminator and Lethal Weapon films. Good luck finding them!!

  • Boxes of detonators for explosives, backup equipment, shell casings and canisters, repair equipment and tools, backup parts of varying types and limbs.

  • Four or so computer terminals linked together, along with the biggest item: her "Bed" - a gigantic cylindrical containment unit used for repairs, sleeping, recharging, etc. The cylinder would stand to her ceiling at least and take up the most space in the apartment.

  • Last but not least, several different red bows and ties, as well as her old Gekkoukan Highschool uniform, multiple black military coat dresses (with matching jackets), black dress pants, backup sunglasses, an old white dress and a pair of familiar headphones. She also has MC's Evoker.

  • (Aigis' room would most likely be cramped full of these crates and dangerous weapons, much like her old room was back at the Dormitory. Since she doesn't require a bed, this would only give her more space for her weapons)

Things seemed to be going so well, but from her experience, life loved throwing curveballs her way. At first, she chalked it up to another trick of the mind; perhaps she was still inside the realm of the TV all along? Had she truly fulfilled her promise to Naoto? To save her friends as well as Mitsuru and Akihiko? And what of her sister's plight - trapped in a world of her own creation, perpetually wandering the halls of the school that she never even belonged to?

It wasn't right. But neither was her assumption.

This world was completely different from anything she could have fabricated. It wasn't Tatsumi Port Island, and furthermore, why would she even dream up such a thing? The desire to return to the past had left her, much like the urge to cast aside her humanity did three long years ago.

So why was she chosen for this?

New questions filled her to capacity, possibilities and probabilities overflowing the brim of her mind. The last thing she had remembered was boarding the plane with her sister after finally parting Inaba, but this place was vastly different, even from what little she witnessed inside the TV. Regardless, she was thankful she couldn't seem to sense any immediate hostilities, but even so, a perpetual wrongness filled her consciousness. Her mind wasn't clouded as it was with the Arena, but still the feeling persisted... Something was definitely amiss, and she would get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible.

Amidst the waves of people she stood, clad in her solid black business attire, pondering her situation and what to make of it. She narrowed her eyes, taking in the entirety of the scenery until she located the source of her distress: A barrier. Much grander in scale than the small room-encapsulating barriers that had been used in the Arena or anything else she'd encountered; this one had trapped the entire city, leaving her curiosity piqued, though it wasn't until she investigated further that the reality of the situation kicked in.

GPS, radio waves, not even the Internet seemed to be functioning properly. She was completely cut off from the outside world, and as far as her other sensors could tell, that hypothesis was an absolute reality. Without wasting another precious moment, she turned to her friends - setting her radio device in on picking up their frequencies. Normal radio waves didn't seem to work, but it was better than standing around without a clue of what to do next.

"Mitsuru-san, Akihiko-san, can either of you hear me?"

Static remained the only reply, leaving Aigis to her only other option. She turned towards the nearest passerby, waving them over and apologizing for the inconvenience, though by some cruel trick of fate, that's exactly when Midnight struck. A familiar feeling went flitting through her heart as reality quickly shifted, leaving her standing in a field of transmogrified coffins. The skies bled green, clouds bathed an eerie red and parting around the pale shine of the low moon. Her pupils dilated so quickly she could hear the camera hookups in her optic nerves grind.

Truly and utterly bewildered for the first time in what felt like ages, she cast her gaze up to the sky, her expression the very definition of disbelief.

    "T-this can't be happening..."

Familiar sensations of despair brushed against her heart as time began rewinding itself before her eyes, back to the days of the Tartarus investigations back at Tatsumi Port Island. Shadows. Apathy Syndrome. Strega. Nyx. All of the darkness related to the sight of the dark hour rose up into the forefront of her mind, though she sharply squashed them flat before even realizing what was happening.

The disbelief in her gaze melted away, replaced by determination and strength - the fleeting sense of fear overpowered by sheer determination and force of will. It had made absolutely no sense, but somewhere within the depths of her heart she knew it to be true... This was real. And yet, despite that horrifying fact, she felt absolutely confident in her ability to handle this. Whatever it was. Whoever or whatever was behind it. She would not falter. In her eyes, this was exactly the type of situation she could blossom in. She was built for the purpose of eliminating threats to humanity such as the Dark Hour, and her belief in herself and her friends is what gave her the heart she had learned to cherish so much in the course of only a few short years.

Empowered by a sense of duty and steel fisted determination, Aigis grabbed the front of her suit coat and spun, seamlessly whipping her military grade business suit off her pristine ivory colored armor and into the wind. Sensing something peculiar nearby, she leaped into the air and engaged her boosters, arcing off into the sky like a missile without a moment's hesitation. Regardless of what this was, she will find her friends and in them she will persevere.
